Henry is 14 months old!
It is true - Henry is 14 months old today (as an aside - when do we stop referring to his age in months and instead do years? When he is two, I suppose. It is hard to imagine referring to him as my 76 month old someday...)
Here is a picture of Henry from this time last year:
And here is one from today:
Henry continues his obsession with shoes. He is now attempting to put them on his feet - not very well, I might add - as well as stealing any unattended "adult" shoes laying about and then placing them oh-so-carefully on our dining table. This is apparently where shoes belong. It is also scary to see how tall he now is and how far he can reach onto the top of the table and kitchen counters - setting something on the table no longer guarantees its safety.
He has also discovered the joy of playing with balls, and can be occupied for quite a while throwing a ball ("throwing" is used loosely here) and then chasing after it. "Taking turns" is not yet a concept he grasps, so for now it is a one man ball playing show.
In other news, this morning we had his follow up eye appointment at Children's Hospital. Once again the hospital impressed us with their efficiency and friendliness, and more importantly Henry received a clean bill of health for his eyes - no problems at all and no need for a return visit.
Henry celebrated the good news by taking a TWO AND A HALF HOUR NAP. This was much appreciated, especially considering the rainy day we are having. Thanks Henry!!!

Fun at the Park
I'm not sure if I have mentioned it before, but I LOVE the neighborhood we live in. One of the best things about it is the truly amazing number of parks and playgrounds around. It is an extremely family-friendly and kid-centric area to live (if you have ever had to navigate these sidewalks all the while dodging Bugaboos, Kettrikes, and lines of pre-schoolers all holding a rope you will know what I mean). We currently have 4 playgrounds that we take Henry to on a regular, rotating basis (all a 15 minute walk at most) and today we added number 5. It may be our new favorite - Henry had a ball.
The park has a very nice rose garden, and it seems that Henry may be a budding botanist. He LOVED the roses - he walked around them for a good 30 minutes, and at times would hold the fence, stare at the roses, and then begin laughing.
He also enjoyed the play equipment. Henry has recently learned to walk up stairs (as long as they are not too high and there is also a banister low enough for him to hold onto and help pull himself), so he was pleased to find some play equipment just the right size to practice on. No more crawling up the stairs! Now he just needs to learn to walk DOWN.

Last Baby Class
Today was our final day of our "Mom/Baby" class. Henry and I have been going to this class almost every week since he was 6 weeks old! We decided it was time to move on - next week Henry starts his classes at My Gym instead (where he will be able to run around to his heart's content).
Here is a picture of Henry and some of his classmates from the end of his 1st term of classes when he was 3 months old:
And here is a picture from today with our good friends Keira, Kate, Dora, and Lucas who have been with us in every class since the beginning - they have all grown so much! (well, the babies that is...)

Celtics Win!!!!
Boston continues our world domination of sports!!! (well, except the Bruins)
Mike says people hate Boston fans because of attitudes like mine. I say, whatever! :)
Yes, Mike and I actually stayed up and watched the entire game - and boy are we paying for it now (especially because Henry broke his lovely streak of sleeping until 7 AM and got up at 5:45 AM this morning). I was hoping to continue the tradition of bringing him to the victory parades here, but they scheduled it for tomorrow - the same day as his final baby class. I think Henry will enjoy class more than the parade, so unfortunately we won't be able to go.
Now we move on to baseball and hopefully a repeat of last year's championship!

Happy Father's Day!
A big "Happy Father's Day" greeting to all the dads, step-dads, and dads-to-be out there. Also, a big THANK YOU to Mike for being such a wonderful father to Henry.
Naturally, to celebrate Father's Day, the Powells made....a beehive cake!!!
What can we say? We love a good beehive cake! We did mix it up this time and make an almond cake instead of our usual lemon cake. We are craaaaaazy.
In other Powell news - Henry has now learned to climb up on the couch (getting down is another issue) and how to open doors (with lever handles). Both are developments that should make our life VERY interesting going forward!
His new favorite things to do are to open his dresser drawers and gleefully fling all of his clothing onto the floor, and then put it back. He also is still enjoying his new found skill of walking backwards (he is like a little Michael Jackson) and has recently become as obsessed with his hats as he is with his shoes, carrying them throughout the house. He definitely takes after me with his love of accessories.
As some of you may have seen, there is some transition going on at Mike's company with the CFO (and Mike's boss) leaving at the end of this month. This should mean an interesting (and busy) few months coming up for Mike - we shall see what happens.
For me, I just started my term on the executive board of the Brookline MOM'S club (today the Mom's club, tomorrow the world!!!) and have (shockingly) already started sending in applications for pre-schools. Even though Henry won't be starting until September 2010, apparently I am on the late side for this. Let me tell you, it is HARD to fill those applications out. They ask what Henry's interests are. Ummm...running around the house naked and eating his shoes? Can I put that on the application? Do you think it may hurt his chances? :)
