3 Year Appointment
We had Henry's 3 year appointment this morning. It was his first real "big kid" appointment - he was weighed and measured on the big scale, sat on a stool for his eye exam, etc. He did a fabulous job - the doctor was very pleased that he is potty trained, and was impressed by his behavior during the appointment as well as by his alphabet knowledge (he was a bit of a show off during the eye exam).
He weighs 34 pounds (75%) and is 39 inches tall (75-90%), so has grown a lot in the past 6 months!
I went into the appointment with my only concern being his eating - he eats like a bird. A very small bird. He skips dinner entirely 75% of the time. Other times, like Tuesday night, he eats things like one bite of broccoli and half an apple. But, since he is up almost 2 pounds in 6 months I guess it is working for him, and the doctor isn't worried. She had a few tips for helping him eat better, so we shall see how it goes (he did polish off a huge lunch this afternoon, so that is good).
And, we were out all morning - first at the doctor and then the park, and still accident free!!!

I'm Calling It
(please don't let this jinx me, please, please, please)
I am officially calling it - after 3 years and approximately 5000 diapers, Henry is potty trained! And, it only took 19 hours (we started at 4 PM on Saturday, and his last accident was Sunday at about 1 PM)! GO HENRY!!!! (I guess there is something to be said for waiting until 3 years old)
Henry has been PERFECT since Sunday afternoon. He goes by himself and goes often without me reminding him. We were out and about yesterday and most of the day today, and he did really well with public bathrooms. Also today he got to go and pick out his new Thomas Train as a reward for staying clean and dry for 3 days straight. He was very happy with that.
I am assuming that he will definitely have accidents - especially next week when he goes back to school and is busy playing with his friends. But, he obviously knows what he is doing, so I still think we can officially remove him from the diaper list.
The main problems we now need to deal with are the fact that he needs to learn how to do buttons and snaps (not so hot with that right now) and that I can tell I will have a LOT of trouble weaning him off the jellybean rewards he has thus far been receiving.
Congrats Henry, we are so proud!

Day 2
Well, Day 2.5 really. It was great! A full day and NO ACCIDENTS! Henry did a fabulous job all day long, and still seems really excited about the process. We did have to cut off the "reward just for trying" that we had been doing (mini marshmallows)because he was "trying" every 30 seconds and very obviously just doing it for the treat. Luckily, he was OK with that and kept up the hard work. Tomorrow we do the big test and go out in public. It will be interesting to see how he does in the land of public restrooms.
Today we pretty much stayed around the house, and close to the bathroom. So, we did some chalk drawing on the driveway:
(can you see he is somewhat obsessed with his rain boots right now?)
We played in the backyard for a while where Henry befriended an earthworm that he carried around for about 15 minutes:
And played in the kitchen sink for a while:
(he is going to hate me someday for these pictures)

Potty Training
Once the fun of the birthday party ended, we decided to get serious with the potty training. As the last friend left, we told Henry that since he is now 3 years old, he is big enough to use the potty. We went cold turkey - Henry helped throw all of his diapers in the trash, we put the diaper genie on the curb, broke out the underwear, and went at it.
Yesterday afternoon was OK. This morning was bad - every pair of pants he owned, plus two pairs of sneakers were soaked by nap time (something else got on the carpet that we will not speak of). We broke a cardinal rule of the "3 day potty training" regime we are following and took him out this morning (to Liam's 1st birthday party - happy birthday Liam!) and naturally he peed on their floor (although Liam's sister Meredith peed on our floor a few times while she was potty training, so I guess it evens out). By nap time today both Henry and I were very frustrated.
This afternoon, he was fabulous! Three successful trips to the bathroom, all unprompted by me (he would be playing and yell, "I have to go potty!", then run to the bathroom and do it all on his own)and no accidents! He is VERY motivated by his rewards - mini marshmallows and jellybeans. It was great! I know that tomorrow we may be back to square one, but this afternoon gave me hope that someday we will leave the house again without bringing five changes of clothes with us. The rest of the week I am skipping the gym and Henry's school is closed for Spring Break, so we will stay inside and hopefully soon have a potty trained child!

Birthday Zoo Trip
To celebrate Henry's birthday in style, we met his friends Jake, Kate, and Lila today for a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo. (see Henry way down in the bottom right?):
The kids checking out the zebras:
Driving a truck by the lion exhibit:
Posing by the camels:
Enjoying some birthday cupcakes:
Conversing with a gorrila:
On the carousel:
Thanks to our friends for joining us - we had a great time!
(wondering about the giant blue band-aid on Henry's forehead? He had a run in with a wall while riding his scooter through the house. It isn't bad, but he refuses to take the band-aid off. Oh well)

Marathon Monday
Happy Patriots' Day to all in Massachusetts!
The Boston Marathon runs on Patriots' Day every year, and since the runners go by right through our neighborhood, Henry and I once again were there to see the action.
Our viewing spot for the past few years:
Henry waiting for the runners:
The pace car (we were watching at about mile 23 - it is unbelievable how quickly the elite runners go):
First of the elite men (and eventual winner - Robert Cheruiyot):
Henry getting into the spirit and clapping for the runners:
Running his own mini-marathon on the way home:
